Drive: The surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, with Daniel Pink  (YouTube)

The Puzzle of Motivation, with Daniel Pink (TED)

My reaction:  Here we are over a decade later and most people are still unaware of this research.  My prediction: We will more and more recognize and act on this principle, going forward.

The moral roots of liberals and conservatives, with Jonathan Haidt (TED)

My reaction: This talk, given back in 2008, is remarkably prescient.

My perspective: We live in times of rapid change that are really no one's fault. These rapid changes are due to conditions that are largely beyond our control. This situation favors those who are more comfortable with a changing world and works against those who wish to maintain preexisting culture and societal structures.

Firehose of Lies (a video)

Firehose of Falsehoods (an article that preceded that video)

My reaction: In times of rapid change and upheaval, people's concerns and fears are typically more heightened.  During such times, it seems more likely that many people will be drawn to someone who promises stability and control, because they want help to calm their fears.  Unfortunately, this can open the door for someone (or some group) to come along and take advantage of such people to amass power instead of really helping.  My opinion is that Donald Trump is an example of this.
But as I discuss in my video, Conversation #3 (link in the left column), in my book (see messagerain.com), ... and based on what I'm saying here, just removing Donald Trump from office may do little to resolve the fundamental issue - that we are going through times of rapid and profound changes in the world.  Instead of arguing about President Trump exclusively, perhaps we can devote ourselves to finding ways to help each other with our fears and work together to get through this and continue to build a positive future.

Why Social Media is inherently divisive.

My comment:  When I say "media," I mean every possible environment through which we communicate, not just TV, radio, & newspapers, or even so-called social media. So why is "social" media sometimes so anti-social?  Even abusive?  If you look at it's characteristics, you can see why - it's hooked into certain aspects of human nature!

The kruger-dunning syndrome

My comment: Here's another way the issues we face today stem  from aspects of our human nature.  These characteristics are shared by pretty much all of us, regardless of class, race, or political affiliation.

"All human behavior is either an act of love or a cry for love." - Stan Dale

I have been producing video since 1973. Historically, I have worked in various video media over the years, based on the technology available: analog tape, digital tape, and now direct digital recording.  My most recent works are listed first.

Break (2014 - 2017)

Between 2014 and 2018, I took time off to write and publish my first book, "a man wearing a dress." That served as a dividing line in my life, leading me to refocus on my life's purpose, including a renewed interest in making videos! (see above)

First Direct Digital Series (2009-2015)

Back in 2008, while making some recordings with my standard definition professional camera (the Sony DSR-PD170, see Digital Tape Series, below) I noticed an occasional flash of green in the picture.  Soon, the picture turned completely green and stuck there.  After inquiring, I learned that repairing it would have been too costly.  I knew HD was becoming the standard (NTSC broadcasts were ended in the USA in 2009), so I decided to save my money before buying a new professional camera.
Instead, I began to experiment by making mini documentaries and other video with an iPod nano (5th generation).  I called this my "box camera revolution" - making video with the barest minimum of equipment and simplest technology.  I edited with iMovie (the second generation) on my laptop computer.  Here are some of the results from those years:

In 2011, I decided it was time to work with a camera with more capabilities, so I purchased a Sony HXR-MC50U digital HD camcorder.  Around that time, I also retired my old cell phone so that I could move up to an iPhone 4, which could also record in HD.

Now I had two devices that could record HD video directly to solid state digital memory.  The MC50 is a great little camcorder (I still have it), but after working with it for awhile, I realized that it really couldn't substitute for cameras with the controls and features I had become accustomed to, back in the analog days (with the M3 and the PD-170 - see below).  The two biggest issues for me were control of focus, zoom, and iris via lens rings instead of a tiny knob and rocker switch (for the iris and zoom, respectively), and sound input. The only sound input was a mini plug that would only accept a few models of Sony microphones, and the sound level was automatic only.

Finally, I decided to save my money and get something that would allow me the artistic freedom I yearned for without the constraints and compromises to which I had limited myself for way too long.  It was time to obtain a camera and tripod that would allow me to relax and shoot high quality video without worry.  So, in 2013
, I purchased a new professional high definition camcorder, the Sony HXR-NX5 and a Sachtler tripod.  I returned to editing in Final Cut Pro (which I had used to edit my DVCAM recordings years earlier), but this time with the X generation.  I did a few projects for clients in HD.

Digital Tape Series (2004 - 2009)

In March 2004, I purchased a Sony PD-170 DVCAM camcorder.  It could record a digitized version of standard definition video on either mini DV or DVCAM videotape cassettes.  Around this time, NTSC standard definition analog television was still being broadcast, although digital high definition television was already being developed and tested.  So, this was kind of a transition period in video, as the world was evolving from analog to digital, from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD), from CRT (vacuum tube) displays to flat screens, and from videotape to optical discs, computer style hard drives, and even solid state memory.

At the time, I decided to continue recording in standard definition, partly because of cost, partly because most TV sets were still SD (4 x 3 aspect ratio), and partly because I thought there was still plenty of life in the standard definition medium.
I also obtained a copy of the Final Cut Pro editing system, along with a Macintosh computer with dual processors, and a big enough hard drive to actually edit video on a computer for the first time.

Analog Series (1973 - 2004)

I produced so many analog videos that I put them on a separate page (rather than keep scrolling down here).  See Steve Jobs introducing the first Macintosh Computer (yes I was there, recording!), and watch my documentary of what it took to build the Minuteman Trail, the most popular rail trail in the country!
